Kingston or Montego Bay: Which Jamaican Airport Should You Fly Into?

July 22, 2026 3 min read Esteem Car Rental Guide

Jamaica has two international airports, and which one you fly into shapes your entire trip more than most travelers expect. Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) serves Kingston on the south coast; Sangster International Airport (MBJ) serves Montego Bay on the north coast. They are not close together, and picking the right one, or the right combination, is worth ten minutes of planning before you book flights.

How Far Apart Are They

Kingston and Montego Bay sit roughly three to four hours apart by road, depending on route and traffic, with the drive running either along the coast or through the island's interior hills. This isn't a quick transfer between two parts of the same resort area, it's a genuine cross-island drive, so it's worth building it into your itinerary deliberately rather than as an afternoon side trip.

What Montego Bay Side Offers

Sangster International Airport puts you closest to Jamaica's classic resort circuit: Montego Bay's hotel strip, Negril's Seven Mile Beach, Ocho Rios and Dunn's River Falls. This is the beach-and-resort version of Jamaica most first-time visitors picture, and the north coast towns are close enough together to combine into one trip without much driving fatigue. Our guides to renting a car on this side of the island and Negril cover that circuit in detail.

What Kingston Side Offers

Norman Manley International Airport puts you in the capital: Kingston's culture, food, and music history, the Bob Marley Museum and Trench Town, and same-day access to a Blue Mountains day trip that isn't realistically reachable from the north coast. This is the city-and-culture version of Jamaica rather than the beach-resort version, and it appeals to a different kind of traveler, or the same traveler on a different trip.

Flying Into One, Out of the Other

If your itinerary genuinely wants both sides, beach time up north and culture time in Kingston, it's usually smarter to fly into one airport and out of the other rather than driving the cross-island route twice. Most major airlines that serve Jamaica route through both KIN and MBJ, and it's a routine request when booking. It also means you're not backtracking over the same road twice for no reason.
